A IMPORTÂNCIA DO Q-GRADER

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE Q-GRADER

When it comes to specialty coffee, maintaining high quality throughout all processes is fundamental. Delivering the best sensory experience and unique flavors is what makes Orfeu one of the most awarded coffees in the world.

One of the most important stages for coffee selection is tasting, and this is where the Q-Grader comes in, a specialized professional who assesses whether each bean sample meets the quality standard.

Who is a Q-Grader?

The term Q-Grader comes from "Quality Grader." This professional possesses exceptional sensory and technical skills, and is responsible for evaluating a wide range of coffee beans and ensuring they meet rigorous quality standards. The Q-Grader's ability to identify nuances of flavor, aroma, and balance is essential to ensure that only the best coffees are offered to the consumer.

The role of the Q-Grader in the coffee journey

The coffee production process involves several stages, from bean selection to roasting. The Q-Grader plays a fundamental role in each phase, ensuring that the coffee maintains its excellence. They conduct sensory evaluations, helping to select the best beans for production. One of these evaluations is Cupping, which consists of 12 steps, ranging from roast level to overall coffee evaluation.

How to become a certified Q-Grader

Becoming a Q-Grader is a challenging process that requires dedication and in-depth knowledge of coffee. Interested individuals must participate in specialized courses and undergo rigorous training and exams offered by the Coffee Quality Institute. Certification involves comprehensive training and covers aspects of coffee from botany to tasting, preparing future Q-Graders to guarantee product quality. To maintain an active Q-Grader certificate, calibration must be performed every 3 years.

The impact of the Q-Grader on specialty coffee scores

Specialty Coffee scores are also determined after rigorous evaluation by Q-Graders. They use a scoring system that analyzes factors such as: fragrance, aroma, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, balance, and sweetness to classify coffees according to established standards. Only coffees that achieve a score above 80 points (BSCA) are considered Specialty Coffees. Quality assurance is one of the great differentiators of Orfeu products, which can be found here.

The presence of the Q-Grader is essential in the production chain of specialty coffees: for example, Orfeu, with these specialists, ensures that the coffee maintains its exceptionally high quality.
