CURIOSIDADES SOBRE A SEMANA DE 22

CURIOSITIES ABOUT THE WEEK OF 22

Shall we "drink in" some art and discover some curiosities about what happened at the 1922 Week of Modern Art?

Considered a turning point in Brazilian culture, the Week featured illustrious works by various artists.

One of them, Victor Brecheret, an Italian-Brazilian sculptor, was responsible for introducing modern art through sculpture, being one of the main precursors of the week. Unfortunately, Victor could not be present at this important event, as he was in Paris at the time. Since he couldn't be left out of such a significant moment for art, he sent no less than 12 sculptures to the Municipal Theater of São Paulo.

In addition to Victor, the immortal José Pereira da Graça Aranha, a writer, lawyer, and diplomat from Maranhão, who played a relevant role in the Week of Modern Art, was also present. He opened the event with the reading of the text "The Aesthetic Emotion of Modern Art," which began with the sentence: "For many of you, the curious and suggestive exhibition that we gloriously inaugurate today is an agglomeration of 'horrors'." In addition to the text, he authored works such as the novel "Cannã" and the play "Malasartes," staged in several countries around the world.

Finally, we had the illustrious Oswald de Andrade, a Brazilian poet, writer, essayist, and playwright. They said he was a personality prone to controversy and outrageous acts. He advocated for the appreciation of our origins, of our historical-cultural past, in a critical way. Parodying, ironizing, and updating our history of colonization. Oswald wanted to know how to stand out with his performance in a scenario so adverse and resistant to the changes proposed by the Week of '22, having the brilliant idea of hiring university students to promote a tomato rain during his presentation.
